CAPE SAN BLAS, FLORIDA - BEACH TRAVELER INFORMATION
Cape San Blas, is located along 30 miles of pristine beaches - often ranked in the top 5 beaches in the continental USA, including a #1 ranking by Dr Beach, Dr. Stephen Leatherman. St. Joseph State Park calls Cape San Blas home as well. This 2,516 acre park reaches from the top of the peninsula for an eight-mile stretch of towering dunes, beautiful unspoiled beaches clear emerald waters.
Cape San Blas, unlike its more developed neighbors to the east and west is known more for what it DOESNT have - no tourist meccas, not high profile amusement parks and no towering high rise condos. The populated area of the the Cape goes from the park entrance to Salinas Park. The Cape offers the tranquil waters of St. Joseph Bay on one side and white sand beaches along the Gulf of Mexico on the other.
The area is known for outstanding fishing, exceptional scalloping and a wonderful and relaxing family vacations. From Cape San Blas it is just a ten-minute drive to Port St. Joe. The area offers small town quaint shopping, a full-service marina and some of the best coastal restaurants in the panhandle.
Cape San Blas and Indian Pass areas are considered low-density, low-rise areas with accommodations ranging from luxury beach estates to bay front homes with private boat docks.
The area beaches are prime nesting grounds for Loggerhead and Greenback turtles. During the first half of turtle season, scores of pregnant sea turtles drag their huge bodies on to Gulf County beaches to lay their eggs. During the second half, thousands of tiny hatchlings dig themselves free and make a mad dash for the relative safety of the Gulf of Mexico.
While many of them make it, some become a snack, or a late night dinner for any one of a number of predators because this all happens in the dark of night. Signs asking people to minimize lighting are posted along the beach during the season that runs May 1 to October. Baby Loggerheads apparently are easily confused and will race towards a glowing light bulb away from the water with obvious disastrous consequences. The little Loggerheads are given a hand up by the volunteer Turtle Patrol, which monitors nesting sites and turtle population in the area.
