Destin Florida – Great Beaches – Lots of activity!

While the Destin Florida Area is often known for its larger than life resorts – a traveler can also select from a variety of private large houses, luxury condos and other direct Beach Front accommodations if you are searching for a luxury vacation away from the hustle of resort congestion. Even with an estimated four and a half million vacation travelers visiting the panhandle area, there are people who live year round in Destin through out the year, and according to a recent 2004 census, the number is reported to be just over twelve thousand people.

The Eastern Pass, also known as Destin Pass, is at the western tip of the peninsula (and is the only outlet of Choctawhatchee Bay) into the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The claim that has been made that the pass was most likely excavated by hand however it appears on the earliest maps of the French, Spanish and English settlers, so this is most likely a well heeled romantic folk tale. On the other end, the East Pass is dredged on a continuous basis to keep it navigable. The very first maps of the East Pass was created by Don Francisco Tapia when he was commissioned to survey of the coast of Florida and draw the map.

The resort beach community of Destin and its sister SanDestin have existed for well over 150 years and began as a mix of small and quaint coastal fishing villages. The actual City of Destin can trace it’s roots all the way back to the seventh century when it is claimed that several tribes of American Indians lived in the area. Destin proper is named for Captain Leonard Destin, who settled in Northwest Florida around eighteen forty five. The captain pulled up roots in the north and headed here from the Connecticut coastline and was an early adopter in the local fishing industry. One hundred sixty five years later Destin is touted as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” and claims the largest, best equipped fishing fleet in all of the Florida Gulf Coast. The primary location of fishing is Destin Harbor where you can see why the City is so proud of its heritage each day as the ships leave and return.

When traveling to the area, you can play a variety of golf courses, get your racquet for a match of tennis and of course do anything you can think of on the Gulf waters, including windsurfing and scuba diving. If fishing is your thing charter a variety of boats and do some outstanding fishing in the Gulf. You will appreciate the fact that the one hundred fathom curve is closer to Destin than any other spot in Florida, making it the fastest way to get out on deep waters of the Gulf.

No matter what your choice of activities in the Florida Panhandle when the day is done, a Luxury Destin Rental are the place for waving goodbye to the day. Whether you select a Luxury Condo or a more modest beach rental, bring the whole family and enjoy The Florida Gulf Coast in Destin!
