Marketing of ‘Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam’ focuses on music, not merchandise
Disney Channel focused on music, not merchandise, for 'Camp Rock 2' promotions, making it tough to find gear for viewing parties. (Kristin Ford/Orlando Sentinel) We joined 8 million other viewers on Friday night to watch the U.S. premiere of Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam . Kids and their families made the long-anticipated sequel — the original debuted in 2008 — the top cable movie so far in 2010. Marketing this movie has been different than the first installment — and even Disney Channel’s High School Musical trilogy. Finding merchandise is almost impossible. The Disney Store carries some girls’ T-shirts, but that’s it. World of Disney and Target, which had a lot of toys, school supplies, clothing and even Halloween costumes for the original movie, don’t have anything. I was happy we still had paper products and decorations from a previous Camp Rock birthday party, but those were in short supply, too, for viewing parties. The promotion strategy for Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam seems odd, given how popular the franchise is. The DVD is available in stores tomorrow, yet it will be shown on Disney Channel again tonight at 8 ET for the fourth consecutive night. The standard DVD format of Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, Extended Version includes two additional songs, “Walking in My Shoes” and “Different Summers,” which are on the deluxe soundtrack, plus the rock-along version that aired Saturday night. The bonus features on the Blu-ray combo pack have the standard DVD extras and segments on Camp Star’s stars and videos from Camp Rockers around the world. Music, rather than merchandise, has been the focus this summer. The Camp Rock 2 soundtrack was released almost a month ahead of the movie, rather than the typical week out. And the stars kicked off a concert tour in July that is still going strong. Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato stopped at Daytona Beach’s Ocean Center on Sunday night. See exclusive photos from the show here . Despite the name, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam might not be the last in the series, says my colleague, Orlando Sentinel Television Critic Hal Boedeker. Apparently, Disney execs haven’t declared Camp Rock 2 a swan song yet.

“When a warm breeze blows in from the Gulf, you'll definitely notice.”
Yeah, I bet. It’ll be the fires from the burning oil. Not to beat the shit out of local tourism efforts in Florida, I’m not. They have a huge challenge to keep the crowds coming this summer. This was going to be more about contextual …

My kids won’t be wearing Disney Bandz, Silly Bandz full-time after scary incident
(Kristin Ford/Orlando Sentinel) Those that follow me on Twitter know that on my three visits to the Magic Kingdom last week, I found most of the new Disney Character Bandz for sale at The Emporium. My children had been anticipating the release of the popular bracelets, so this was exciting news. I allowed each child to pick one pack to open immediately, and I bought the rest for them to “earn” with good behavior during the summer. After I checked to make sure none of the bands was too small for his arm, my son proudly added Mickey Mouse and friends to what he was wearing Wednesday night. (Some non-Disney packs contain such tiny shapes that I can’t imagine any children wearing them safely.) Turns out I was right to be concerned, but I should have taken my caution a step further. When my son woke up Saturday morning, his hand was swollen to twice the size of his other hand. It was a scary sight, and we called our pediatrician right after ripping off the Silly Bandz. Because he wasn’t having any other symptoms, the nurse advised us to keep his arm elevated to bring down the swelling. We alternated that with icing his hand for more than 12 hours. Finally, Sunday morning, it looked normal. Apparently, my son slept on his arm the wrong way or the bracelets — which were not just the Disney ones — got tangled during the night. However it happened, we learned our lesson the hard way and are thankful the situation wasn’t more serious. My son can still wear the Silly Bandz and Disney Character Bandz, but not to sleep and not during other activities, such as sports, when they could cause an injury.

A more casual look for Minnie Mouse and her friends?
By Jason Garcia, Orlando Sentinel Mickey Mouse is finally easing up on his ladies. In a seismic shift that some employees describe as the biggest fashion shake-up at Central Florida’s largest employer since men were permitted to grow mustaches, Walt Disney World has decided to allow female employees to forgo pantyhose when wearing skirts. That move is the biggest of several changes being made to the “Disney Look” — the clean-cut, all-American appearance that Disney has demanded from its theme-park employees since the days of Walt Disney himself. While it may seem a trifling matter, it is an issue that Disney takes very seriously. Changes to Disney’s appearance code are made only after the company has studied similar guidelines at other theme parks and Fortune 500 corporations, and they can consume as many executive-level meetings as a multimillion-dollar attraction. The rigid fashion rulebook dates back to the opening of Disneyland in 1955, when Walt Disney instituted strict requirements for employee appearance to ensure that theme-park workers would appear friendly and approachable to guests and not distract from the fantasy world depicted inside the park. The company founder was eager to distinguish his new theme park from the sleazy carnivals of the time. “There’s a guest expectation of what they expect to see with our cast members,” said Vinny Pagliuca, director of creative costuming and cosmetology for Walt Disney Entertainment. “There’s still an expectation of a clean, Disney look.” Then again, the conservative approach has led to some unpopular rules among a company workforce of nearly 58,000 people in Central Florida alone — such as the requirement that women don pantyhose, even when working outside on steamy summer days. The decision to permit employees to forgo pantyhose applies to most Disney employees, except, for instance, in cases where the leg wear is part of a particular costume. The other changes apply only to non-costumed, professional staff. Women, for instance, will for the first time be permitted to wear sleeveless tops — though in typically restrictive Disney fashion, only if the shoulder straps are at least three inches wide. Female employees also will be allowed to wear Capri pants and sling-back shoes that also have open toes. Men, meanwhile, will now be allowed to wear untucked, Tommy Bahama-style shirts. Female employees say the dropping of the pantyhose requirement is the most substantial change Disney has made to its appearance policies since 2000, when it finally scrapped a longstanding ban on mustaches. Disney tweaked its guidelines again a few years later by deciding to permit male employees to style their hair in cornrows. Viewing Disney’s Summer Nightastic! fireworks, Electrical Parade with kids
Peter Pan battles Captain Hook on a pirate ship float in Disney World's Main Street Electrical Parade. (Kristin Ford/Orlando Sentinel) You won’t want to miss the Main Street Electrical Parade and Summer Nightastic! Fireworks Spectacular at the Magic Kingdom if you’re visiting Disney World this summer. Unfortunately, neither will any of the other guests. With a little planning, though, the crowds don’t have to be overwhelming. Here are some tips to keep parents and kids sane while waiting in the Florida heat with thousands of your new friends. First, the return of the Main Street Electrical Parade is all about the nostalgia of childhood memories. You can bet you’re not the only parents who want to share an old favorite with a new generation, so if you want a good spot, get there earlier than you think you should. We planned to stake out our concrete an hour before last night’s parade, and we were too late to sit on the curb anywhere on Main Street. We stood behind several rows of people and wondered how much we’d actually see. As luck would have it, they remained seated during the parade, and we had a great view. You can’t count on that, though, as other sections had guests standing from the curb to the back. If your child rides in a stroller, now is the time to put it to good use. Older kids can stand in the seats for a better view, allowing Dad to forgo the shoulder ride. Also, strollers help keep overeager neighbors from continually inching forward until everyone starts to feel claustrophobic. Plan ahead for the wait. Whining can set in quickly when kids are tired, hot and impatient. Cast members offer the usual hula hoops in the street, which always seem to be popular entertainment. But you’re likely to need more than that to get through an hour wait, so bring something your child likes to do, such as a coloring book, a small toy or an electronic game. Visit the restrooms and get snacks or drinks before finding your spot for the evening entertainment. The closer it gets to the start time, the more difficult it is to make your way through the crowds. Unless it’s an emergency, who wants that hassle? The Summer Nightastic! fireworks seem to be louder than Wishes, so if you have a young child, you probably don’t want to park your family right in front of the castle. Try the middle of Main Street, where the sound won’t seem as scary for little ones and you’ll have a good view of the perimeter pyrotechnics. And afterward you’ll be patting yourself on the back when you have a head start on the crowds to the monorail station.
